For the first time, I feel like I understand why most of the world is so inlove with music. It's not something that's always resonated with me. I don't have any favoured genres - in fact, I'm left confused by what types of music the different genres are supposed to represent. I struggle to remember the words of songs. And, I rarely feel the desire to hear a specific sound or melody. But, every now and again, rhythm makes sense out of everything in a way that nothing else could.
Starting with my own being. Rhythm has been there since the start. From the moment my heart started beating - dum-dum...dum-dum...dum-dum. When I breath on every step when I run - in-in-out-out...in-in-out-out...in-in-out-out. When I sprint over a set of hurdles - one-two-three, over...one-two-three, over...one-two-three, over. Even as a sit here, typing, the key strokes have a beat to them - albeit, rather spontaneous - that started from inside me, and now finds itself making its way into the world around me.
As I create, notice or move to a rhythm, so do others. The beauty of rhythm is that it allows us to tune into the same frequency. And man, it feels good. It feels good because, in a world we're all trying to make sense of, music reassures us that we're not alone in what we're experiencing. Words don't do it justice. When we sing along to a song, and see someone else singing the same song - we can only sing louder. When stomp to a beat, and tens, hundreds or thousands of other people are stomping to the same beat - we can only stomp harder. Appreciate, sing, or move...not as individuals...but as one collective...one humanity.
When we sing for long enough. Dance for long enough. Feel for long enough. We notice that the rhythm that breaths life into us also breaths life into all that is around us. That there is no line between humanity and nature. If we want, we can sing with the wind, dance with the fire. As we walk the earth, the earth walks us. As we flow through water, water flows through us. We don't need to turn on a speaker to hear the beat, the beat is always there, always ready for us to move with it. I hope that you find yourself enjoying the rhythm as much as I do.
Thanks for tuning in for a little while. Bye-bye.
